SUMMARY:Peni Candra Rini @ the Hill Center DC with members of Rumput
DESCRIPTION:Peni Candra Rini with wayang projections. Photo by Matt Mehlan.\nHill Center is absolutely thrilled to welcome back Peni Candra Rini. Her 2023 concert remains one of the most electric\, sublime\, and utterly singular we have ever presented. \nDescribed by the Kronos Quartet as “one of the world’s greatest singers\,” the Indonesian composer Peni Candra Rini combines experimental music\, dance\, and shadow theatre to reimagine the Javanese legends she grew up with. Peni is joined by musicians Shahzad Ismaily and Andy McGraw\, along with members of Rumput and Gamelan Raga Kusuma. \nPeni Candra Rini is a renowned Javanese singer\, composer\, and faculty member at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts. The Kronos Quartet has described her as “one of the world’s greatest singers.” She is a master of several traditional forms and is regarded as one of Indonesia’s most daring young composers\, one of only a handful of female composers in the majority Muslim nation. She has performed extensively internationally\, including several world tours as the featured singer for Robert Wilson’s I La Galigo. She is a recipient of grants from the Asian Cultural Council\, is a two-time grantee of the US State Department’s One Beat and Fulbright programs\, and in 2022 was named an Aga Khan Foundation laureate of the arts. In 2023 she became the first woman to be commissioned to compose a work for the Mangkunegaran court of Central Java and in 2024 was bestowed the court name Raden Nganten Tumenggung\, the highest honor offered by the Raja. In 2024 she completed a suite for string quartet commissioned by the Kronos Quartet and Carnegie Hall. Entitled Segara Gunung\, the thirty-minute work concerns the impacts of climate change on the Indonesian archipelago and has been performed by Kronos on major stages throughout the US and Europe. In 2024 she published two albums on the New Amsterdam label\, in collaboration with Shahzad Ismaily\, Andy McGraw\, and members of Deerhoof\, featuring her experimental compositions for Javanese and Western ensembles. In 2024 her trio with Shahzad Ismaily and Andy McGraw (and friends) performed at the Edinburgh International Festival\, Roulette\, and other US venues and will perform in 2025 at the Big Ears Festival and the Monheim Triennale\, among other venues.

SUMMARY:Rumput with Balinese shadow puppet master Gusti Sudarta at the Smithsonian
DESCRIPTION:  \nGusti Sudarta with wayang kulit\nWayang kulit (shadow theater) performed by I Gusti Putu Sudarta\, accompanied by live kroncong and gamelan music performed by Rumput and members of  Gamelan Raga Kusuma. \nVisit the Smithsonian Institute’s Freer Gallery of Art events calendar for FREE (but strongly recommended) tickets and contact information. \nSudarta will perform Sutasoma. In this shadow play\, the only child of a royal family rejects the throne and escapes to the forest for a life of Buddhist contemplation. But first he must conquer various ogres in the forest. \nWayang kulit are flat leather puppets made from carved and painted rawhide. The Javanese and Balinese shadow play tradition is at least 1000 years old. It is both a sacred genre and a mass entertainment for local communities. Besides philosophical and religious instruction\, performances include a healthy dose of bawdy humor and manic fight scenes. \nThe performance lasts approximately 75 minutes. Afterwards\, you can meet Sudarta and learn about his puppets. \nI Gusti Putu Sudarta is Faculty and Director of the Theatre Program at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts in Denpasar\, Bali\, Indonesia. Sudarta was born into a family of artists in the village of Bedulu\, Bali\, in 1968. From a young age\, he studied traditional Balinese gamelan music with teachers in his village. He is a prolific musician\, dancer\, composer\, and shadow master\, actively performing at Balinese temple ceremonies\, in academic contexts\, at national cultural festivals\, and on international stages. He has taught frequently as a visiting artist in American and Taiwanese universities.

SUMMARY:Peni Candra Rini\, Baba Commandant & the Mandingo Band\, and Mowder Oyal at LeMondo\, Baltimore
DESCRIPTION:BABA COMMANDANT  \nBaba Commandant and the Mandingo Band are a contemporary group from Burkina Faso. Coming from Bobo-Dioulasso\, the group is steeped in the Mandingue musical traditions of their ancestral legacy. The enigmatic lead singer Baba Commandant (Mamadou Sanou) is an original and eccentric character who is well respected in the Burkinabé musical community. A sort of punk Faso Dan Fani activist for traditional Mandingo music\, Baba continues to redefine the boundaries between traditional and modern. In 1981\, he joined the Koule Dafourou troupe as a dancer. Later\, he embarked on his current musical direction as a singer first in Dounia and then in the Afromandingo Band. \nHis current band — when he’s not playing with the now-famous Burkinabé musician Victor Démé — is the Mandingo Band. At present\, he is a practitioner of the Afrobeat style\, drawing inspiration from the golden era of Nigerian music. Fela Kuti/Africa 70 and King Sunny Adé are big influences\, as is the legendary Malian growler Moussa Doumbia. \nBaba Commandant plays the ngoni\, the instrument of the Donso (the traditional hunters in this region of Burkina Faso and Mali). His audience comprises multiple generations and strata of Burkinabé society; he accordingly adapts his repertoire to his surroundings\, which range from cabaret Sundays in Bobo-Dioulasso to the sound systems of Ouagadougou. \nBaba Commandant and the Mandingo Band are a formidable force steeped in Ouagadougou’s DIY underground musical culture. Juguya is their sound. \nPENI CANDRA RINI \nPeni is a renowned Javanese singer\, composer\, and faculty member at  the Indonesian Institute of the Arts. Raised in an artistic family in a  small fishing village in East Java\, Peni first began studying voice at  the age of 5 under her father\, a village shadow master. She later moved  to the Central Javanese town of Solo to study at the Indonesian National  Conservatory of the Arts\, where she completed her doctorate and was  hired as faculty in 2020. She is a master of several traditional forms  and is regarded as one of Indonesia’s most daring young composers\, one  of only a handful of female composers in the majority Muslim nation. The Kronos String Quartet is currently performing her latest chamber work\, Maduswara\, which they premiered this year at Carnegie Hall. She is a former recipient of grants from the Asian Cultural Council\, is a two-time grantee of the US State Department’s One Beat Program and in 2022 was named an Aga Khan Foundation laureate  of the arts. During the spring 2023 semester she will be teaching as a  Visiting Fulbright Artist-Scholar at the University of Richmond and  Virginia Commonwealth University. Her latest experimental album is being  produced in collaboration with Deerhoof’s John Dieterich. \n  \nMOWDER OYAL \nMowder Oyal is a quartet of musicians and multidisciplinary artists that make hardcore punk and free jazz at the same time. With rapper/actor/arts advocate Eze Jackson on vocals\, musician and arts lawyer Adam Holofcener on guitar\, Konjur Collective’s Bashi Rose on percussion\, and Mind On Fire’s James Young on bassoon\, Mowder Oyal (phonetic Baldamore-ese for “motor oil”) is a sonic supergroup providing the soundtrack for the there-is-never-not-a-pandemic-goin’-on era we are all indefinitely in. Past members include founding vocalist SHAN Wallace (AKA Lor Ugly Yo).

Peni will be supported by Balinese master musician Gusti Sudarta and local Richmond musicians. \nIn addition to our traditional keroncong repertoire this show will premiere two new ensembles performing experimental music from Java: an electric keroncong group that incorporates elements of surf-rock\, noise\, and metal\, and a new percussion ensemble playing groove-oriented accompaniment on a hybrid set of gamelan & western drum kit. \nThis is our only confirmed gig featuring the full range of this repertoire in Richmond before we head off to DC\, Baltimore\, and NYC\, so don’t miss it! \nEarly show — doors at 6! \nCompositions by Peni Candra Rini\, I Wayan Sadra\, Danis Sugiyanto\, Zoel Mistortoify\, and Andy McGraw.
