SUMMARY:Rumput and Bread & Puppet Theater Company at Highpoint Gallery
DESCRIPTION:World Famous Bread and Puppet Theater visits Richmond on a rare 14 week tour across the continent! \nBASIC BYEBYE SHOW: A manifesto on transformation\, inspired by Albrecht Dürer’s apocalyptic woodcuts and the daily news. \n“The Basic Byebye Show originally set out to define and illuminate the need for basic byebyes in our culture\, but has progressed to respond to the event of regular mass shootings\, in particular the massacre in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school in Parkland\, Florida”\, says director Peter Schumann. “The theme is the birth of the gun by the 2nd Amendment Holy Bull\, presided over by James Madison\, which leads to the routine occurrence of horror and ends with the funeralization of that ill-conceived symbol of a free people.” \nThe Basic Byebye Show expands on the traditional byebyes of funerals and train stations by turning byebye-saying into a political act. It helps us say byebye to the gun – as a practical tool for massacre-making\, as a symbol of “freedom\,” as an instrument of political influence\, and as an economic dependency. The show mourns the victims of gun massacres and turns this mourning toward the transformative political possibility of saying byebye to the gun once and for all. \nAfter the performance Bread and Puppet will serve its famous free sourdough rye bread with aioli\, and Bread and Puppet’s “Cheap Art” – books\, posters\, postcards\, pamphlets and banners from the Bread and Puppet Press – will be for sale. \nRumput opens at 7pm\, featuring crankie shadow theater\, and traditional and experimental music. We will perform Akar\, our retelling of the Jack & the Beanstalk tale\, fresh off our tour of Java. \nSUGGESTED DONATION OF 10-25$ \n

SUMMARY:Sounding Out Indonesian Music conference @ Cornell University
DESCRIPTION:Kroncong by Rumput\, plus music composed and improvised by Andrew Timar\, CAGE\, and Szkieve. \nThe Cornell Modern Indonesia Project brings together some forty participants from the US\, Canada\, and Indonesia\, to sound out the state of Indonesian music\, both as a subject of scholarly inquiry\, and as an artistic practice pursued within and beyond Indonesia. Those who work primarily as scholars of Indonesian music\, mostly within the field of ethnomusicology\, will be joined by others from in\, around\, and outside academia who work primarily as practitioners: as performers\, composers\, ensemble directors\, and promoters. The mix of paper presentations\, roundtables\, and performances will build on the overlap and connections between these constituencies\, whose priorities and attentions may differ but who fundamentally share a common cause.

DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This show was canceled due to illness! \n\nRumput is thrilled to open for Ceramic Dog. Get there promptly to catch us! \nDJ and sound artist Maria Chavez will perform at the after party. \n“Guitarist Marc Ribot’s wildest project doesn’t mess around. The guitar legend\, with bassist Shahzad Ismaily\, and drummer Ches Smith\, merges funk backbeats with the taut chaos of Sonic Youth and flashes of Woodstock Santana.”\n(NY Magazine\, 2018) \nBorn in Lima\, Peru\, Maria Chavez is known as an abstract turntablist\, sound artist and DJ. Accidents\, coincidence and failures are themes that unite her sound sculptures\, installations and other works with her solo turntable performance practice.
